AVIF is a modern image format that often beats JPG and WebP on file size for photos and web graphics. If your site, CDN, or design pipeline supports AVIF, converting camera JPGs or PNG exports can cut bandwidth without a visible quality drop.
Imgician converts to AVIF in your browser — the photo never uploads to our servers. Encoding needs a browser that can export AVIF (Chrome and Safari typically; Firefox may still lag).
Steps: JPG / PNG / WebP → AVIF
- Open JPG to AVIF (or JPEG to AVIF, PNG to AVIF, WebP to AVIF).
- Drop your image (batch works for non-HEIC files — use Batch image converter and set output to AVIF).
- Confirm AVIF is selected as the output format.
- Cast the spell and download the
.aviffile.
If you see a message that AVIF export isn’t supported, switch to Chrome or Safari, or use WebP instead.
When AVIF is a good idea
| Use case | Why AVIF helps |
|---|---|
| Marketing / blog hero images | Smaller downloads, faster LCP |
| Product galleries | Many images × smaller size |
| Progressive web apps | Modern browsers decode AVIF well |
| Replacing heavy JPGs | Often similar quality at lower KB |
When to stick with JPG or WebP
- Form / KYC / exam uploads — almost always want JPG, not AVIF
- Email attachments — JPG or PDF is safer
- Older apps or CMS without AVIF — convert back with AVIF to JPG
- Maximum compatibility still required — WebP is the usual middle ground
Tips for cleaner AVIF exports
- Start from a sharp original (not a heavily recompressed social download).
- Prefer photos and complex graphics; tiny UI icons sometimes stay smaller as PNG/SVG.
- After convert, spot-check in Chrome/Safari — zoom to 100% on faces and fine text.
- Need many files? Use batch convert with AVIF as the shared format, then download the ZIP.
