Indian job and exam applications almost always reject oversized photos — and often signatures too. The notification PDF usually specifies dimensions (cm or pixels) and a maximum file size in KB. Prep both offline before the deadline so you’re not stuck at the last upload step.
Imgician’s tools run in the browser: resize and compress on your phone or laptop without sending the files to our servers.
The workflow that works
Use this order every time:
- Read the notification — note photo size, signature size, background (white / light / light blue), allowed formats (usually JPG), and KB limits.
- Plain background if needed — white, light blue, sky blue, or any color. Guide: change background for forms.
- Resize the photo to the stated size.
- Resize the signature if required.
- Compress each file to the stated KB limit.
- Upload the final downloads (not the camera originals).
Skipping resize and only compressing a huge photo often produces a soft, rejected-looking face. Background + size first, then KB.
Photo sizes you’ll see often
| Common requirement | Tool |
|---|---|
| 3.5 × 4.5 cm (passport / many exams) | Passport size or SSC tool |
| 200 × 230 px | 200×230 |
| Aadhaar-style 3.5 × 4.5 cm | Aadhaar size |
| Stamp size 2 × 2.5 cm | Stamp size |
If the PDF lists something else, use resize in cm or resize in pixels with custom values.
Signature sizes
Many SSC / banking / recruitment forms want a signature around 140 × 60 pixels:
- Sign on white paper with a dark pen.
- Photo or scan with good contrast; crop tightly if needed.
- Resize with Signature 140×60.
- Compress if the KB limit is separate from the photo.

Compress to the portal KB limit
After dimensions are correct:
- 20KB — common strict photo/signature caps
- 50KB — very common on mobile form guides
- 100KB — looser portals
- Custom KB — when the PDF names an odd number
For many JPGs at once (not HEIC), use the batch compressor.
Exam-specific notes
- SSC / similar: photo + signature pair; check whether limits differ for each file.
- UPSC / state PSCs: follow that year’s notice — sizes can change.
- IBPS / banking: often pixel sizes for photo and signature; JPG only is common.
- Government jobs on state portals: don’t assume 50KB — read that board’s PDF.
iPhone checklist
- Convert HEIC to JPG
- Resize photo (and signature)
- Compress to KB
- Upload from Files / Downloads
Troubleshooting last-minute rejects
| Portal message | Likely fix |
|---|---|
| File size too large | Compress again to the exact KB; verify you selected the downloaded file |
| Invalid dimensions / resolution | Re-resize to the notice values |
| Invalid format | JPG via converter |
| Signature not clear | Reshoot on white paper; higher contrast; crop tighter |
| Photo too dark / blurry | New source photo — compression cannot fix a bad original |
